NEST (Nest Support Program)

Madiba Prep Middle School is proud to offer the NEST (NYC ASD Nest) Program, a specialized educational program designed for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who demonstrate academic skills at or near grade level and benefit from additional social, emotional, and communication supports.

Developed through a partnership with New York University (NYU) and the New York City Public Schools, the NEST Program provides students with access to the general education curriculum in an inclusive setting while receiving individualized support to help them succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

Key Features of Our NEST Program

  • Instruction in an integrated co-teaching (ICT) environment
  • Specialized support from trained special education teachers and related service providers
  • Social-emotional learning embedded throughout the school day
  • Social skills instruction and opportunities for peer engagement
  • Individualized Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) tailored to each student's needs
  • Ongoing collaboration among school staff, families, and service providers
  • Professional development and coaching through the NYU-affiliated NEST network

Building Skills and Independence

The NEST Program focuses on building students' independence, self-advocacy, executive functioning, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills while maintaining high academic expectations.

Preparing for High School

As students prepare for high school, families receive support in identifying programs that best meet their child's academic and social-emotional needs. NEST graduates may attend a variety of high schools, including schools that continue NEST programming, other inclusive high school settings, specialized programs, and competitive high school options based on individual strengths, interests, and goals.

A Strength-Based Approach

Through a strength-based approach, the NEST Program helps students develop the confidence, skills, and relationships needed to thrive both in school and beyond.
